From Active Duty Military to the Mental Health Profession: A Life Carved by Resilience.

"I write because I have lived. I counsel because I have survived."
The Journey
Joe W. Boyou Sr.’s story begins far from the literary world. Born in West Africa, his childhood was interrupted by the brutality of a civil war. These early years were not defined by play, but by survival. It was here, amidst the chaos of conflict, that Joe learned his first lessons in resilience—lessons that would become the foundation of his character.
Upon arriving in the United States, Joe didn’t just adapt; he thrived. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, trading the uncertainty of his youth for the rigorous discipline of military service. As a veteran, he carries the values of duty and integrity into everything he does.
After his service, Joe stepped into another frontline: the American corrections system. Working as a corrections officer, he witnessed the raw, often unseen reality of life behind bars. This experience birthed his memoir, Six by Nine, and gave him a unique perspective on human behavior under pressure.
Today, Joe channels these experiences into two paths: Counseling and Writing. He holds a Master’s degree from USM and works as a mental health counselor, helping others navigate their own traumas.
In his spare time, whether he is penning high-stakes thrillers like Antonov-225 or analyzing screenplays in his home office, Joe is driven by a singular ambition: to share stories that matter with his audience.
A devoted husband and father to three energetic boys.
